Visiting the 9/11 Memorial in Jerusalem

The 9/11 Living Memorial Plaza in Jerusalem stands as a solemn tribute by the State of Israel to commemorate the tragic events of the most significant terrorist attack in U.S. history.

It is the only monument outside the U.S that honors all nearly 3000 victims, including five Israelis. At its heart lies a striking 30-foot-tall cenotaph, built in the likeness of the American flag, ascending into a symbolic flame.

Crafted from black metal, the monument incorporates a shard from New York's Twin Towers, grounding its significance in the tragic events of that fateful day.

Opened to the public since 2009, the plaza occupies a serene hillside opposite Jerusalem's main highway from Tel Aviv. For locals and tourists alike, it serves as a poignant reminder of the realities of radical Islam, terrorism, and the unwavering alliance between Israel and the United States in combating such threats.

In 2018, the plaza expanded its tribute with the addition of a new plaque, honoring the 11 victims of the tragic shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh earlier that same year.

How to get there:

Despite its proximity to Israel's busy highway, Road 1, access to the plaza is via a solitary winding road.

A scenic 10-minute drive from the northern end of Begin Boulevard leads through the picturesque Arazim Valley. Beyond its commemorative purpose, the site offers breathtaking vistas of Jerusalem's outskirts, adding to its significance as a place of reflection and remembrance.
