Visiting Saint Peter’s Church in Tiberias, Israel

Nestled between a restaurant and a bar along Tiberias' beach promenade, the Catholic Saint Peter's Church stands as the primary Catholic shrine in the city.

Dating back to the 12th century, it was initially established during the Crusader era but later converted into a mosque following the Crusaders' defeat at the Horns of Hattin. In the 18th century, the Franciscans acquired the property and restored it to its original purpose as a church, dedicated to Saint Peter. Adorning its entrance is a replica of Saint Peter's sculpture from the Vatican.

Following World War II, a memorial wall for Polish soldiers was added to the church's courtyard by the Polish Catholic Church, featuring a replica of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa. The interior of the church is designed in the shape of an upturned boat, symbolizing Peter's connection to fishing on the Sea of Galilee.
