Selichot in Jerusalem, Israel - Rosh Hashana & Kippur 2023

The High Holidays in Israel offer a captivating opportunity to immerse oneself in the deep historical and cultural tapestry of the Holy Land.

Leading up to the High Holidays (Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur), Jewish communities engage in the heartfelt tradition of reciting Selichot, a collection of penitential passages and psalms. In 2023, Rosh Hashana, marking the Jewish New Year, will be observed from September 15th to 17th, followed by Yom Kippur, the Day of Repentance, on September 24th and 25th.

A moving spectacle can be witnessed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, where Selichot are recited nightly from September 9th until Yom Kippur on September 24th, typically taking place around midnight or in the early hours before sunrise. It's worth noting that Sephardic communities begin reciting Selichot a month prior to Rosh Hashana, while Ashkenazi traditions call for them to be said just a few days before the Jewish New Year.

During this meaningful period, it is considered a kind gesture to extend warm wishes of "Shanah Tovah", meaning "Good New Year", to Jewish friends and acquaintances.
